The Enoteca Morandi
These digital pages allow us to open the doors of the Grand Hotel Majestic “già Baglioni” “virtually”. Housed in a historical palazzo. This veritable Hotel-cum-Museum is a mine of curiosities and anecdotes that tell the story of Bologna itself, with which it has always had close ties. Today we take you into the Enoteca Morandi, a temple of hospitality and fine wine.
Face to face with history: the first showcase of Bolognese Futurism
The Enoteca, the palazzo’s wine cellar, is an exclusive location that dates from the 15th century. It was hotel manager Tiberio Biondi who renovated it and dedicated it to the Bolognese painter Giorgio Morandi, one of the most important figures in Italian art in the 20the century. The tribute is more than justified seeing how Morandi used to show his works in this very space in the hotel basement. Intriguingly, Morandi was also present at an event that couple the history of the hotel with that of the artistic avant-gardes. At the age of 23, in fact, he took part in the celebrated exhibition-cum-blitz organised by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, the poet and founder of Futurism, on the night of March 20-21 1914. With him were some of the most important artists of his generation, such as Severo Pozzati – later to become a poster designer under the pseudonym Sepo – Osvaldo Licini, Mario Bacchelli and Giacomo Vespignani.
