Bologna, ancient city on water
Destination
One of the most iconic places to experience this secret Bologna is the ‘little window’ in Via Piella.
By opening this small aperture, you overlook the Canale delle Moline, an enchanting view that reveals the city's past. This canal, once fundamental for the watermills that processed wheat, offers a unique and picturesque perspective, so much so that it is considered one of Bologna's most fascinating sights.
In the 1950s, most of Bologna's canals were buried and forgotten. Today, thanks to the passion and commitment of the inhabitants, this ‘watery’ part of the city is experiencing a new rediscovery and appreciation. Besides the famous little window in Via Piella, other views of the Moline Canal are now accessible from the bridges in Via Oberdan and Via Malcontenti.
Exploring the historic centre, one can come across ancient locks, hidden streams and the mysterious sound of flowing water.
Strolling through the Jewish Ghetto, for example, you will discover the underground flow of the Aposa, while at the intersection of Via delle Moline and Via Capo di Lucca you can hear the roar of the Reno leap.
Come discover a different Bologna, the one that hides beneath its surface, and be surprised by the magic of its hidden canals.
