The Bologna area is once again in the spotlight with a new exhibition at MAGI. Minima Infinita is a collection of works that are ‘minimal’ in their small format, yet extraordinarily intense and potentially ‘infinite’ – just as the frontiers of artistic exploration are boundless, and the passion of collectors knows no limits.

The idea stems from a desire to pay tribute to an insight by Cesare Zavattini (1902–1989) – one of the most original intellectuals, writers and painters on the post-war Italian scene – who, driven by the desire to bring together a large collection of contemporary art within the confines of his Roman apartment, began in 1941 to ask artists to create very small-format works specifically for him, specifying the 8×10 cm as the ‘minimum and maximum’ size, so that they could fully express the value of their creators. It was a conceptual challenge to the most interesting established and emerging artists, a connoisseur’s game, from which, however, an innovative model of collecting emerged – one that was democratic and replicable, because it was based on the idea that anyone can build a wide-ranging collection, even in limited spaces.
