Giovanni Boldini. A glimpse into the soul

To mark the 90th anniversary of his death in Paris in 1931, Palazzo Albergati in Bologna is hosting an extraordinary exhibition dedicated to Giovanni Boldini, featuring over 90 works.

Feminine charm, sumptuous, rustling gowns, the Belle Époque, the salons: this is the captivating world of Giovanni Boldini, a genius of painting who, more than any other, was able to capture the rarefied atmosphere of an extraordinary era. Literature and fashion, music and luxury, art and bistros blend together in the sensual rhythm of the can-can, giving rise to an extraordinary social and cultural renaissance.

The retrospective exhibition *Giovanni Boldini: A Glimpse into the Soul*, structured around a narrative that is both chronological and thematic, presents a rich selection of works that best exemplify Boldini’s style: his unique ability to celebrate feminine beauty and to reveal the most intimate and mysterious soul of the noble figures of the era. Here, then, are famous works from public and private collections such as Mademoiselle De Nemidoff (1908), Portrait of the Actress Alice Regnault (1884), Countess Beatrice Susanna Henriette van Van Bylandt (1903), Countess De Rasty Reclining (c. 1880), The Voile Blouse (c. 1906).

However, this exhibition does not stop at Boldini’s international and creative experience but, through a number of important comparative works, also presents pieces by his contemporaries such as Vittorio Matteo Corcos, Federico Zandomeneghi, Gustave Leonard De Jonghe, Raimundo de Madrazo, Pompeo Massani, Gaetano Esposito, Salvatore Postiglione, José Villegas I Cordero, Alessandro Rontini, Ettore Tito, Cesare Saccaggi, Paul Cesar Helleu and Giuseppe Giani.
